I’m Mary Allen, and I’d love to take you through my journey into the world of design – a passion that has always been in my heart and in my sights. Even before venturing into my own interior design business, I’d often find myself helping family and friends design their homes. But it was the role of a project manager that truly pushed me forward.
In 2017, after bidding farewell to the nonprofit world, I found myself immersed in a unique opportunity. I became a project manager and designer for a real estate company focused on flipping high-end homes. Having experienced flips before without a project manager in place, they learned the value of having a dedicated point person with an eye for finishing details and the ability to keep contractors organized. It was an amazing experience and sparked the launching of my own business.
Clients come in with a variety of needs, with some having a blueprint for a new build and seeking guidance on every aspect of the design process from the right layout, appliances, finishes, and everything in between. Some prefer the element of surprise, where I unveil the finished product only after I’m done, much like a reveal on HGTV. Others want to be part of every decision-making step. I adapt to their preferences, helping them choose everything from flooring, paint, lighting, plumbing, and tile to decor and tchotchkes.
A Client’s House is Their Own Retreat
I like to focus on how clients would use the space, understanding their needs before diving into the design process and figuring out what works best. Everyone’s home needs to be their retreat, a space that perfectly matches their personalities and ways of living. My philosophy is to steer clear of trendy things and, instead, focus on what really works for the clients. I try to get to know them and aim for a timeless, classic style that stands the test of time.
Focusing on Workmanship, Details and Quality
What makes my business stand out is the emphasis I place on collaboration and quality craftsmanship. I work with a fantastic team of detail-oriented contractors who play a crucial role in ensuring the success of every project. As I often say, a designer is only as good as her contractor, and the quality of our work shows in the final result.
Recently I’ve been focusing more on the construction side of the design process. This involves working closely with specialists on elements such as cabinet layout, plumbing and electrical features, and high-end finishing carpentry touches.
Kitchens, being the heart of the home, became my niche in decorating.
Currently, bold colors for kitchens are popular, but I always engage my clients in discussions about long-lasting styles. I advocate for natural wood floors over gray options, emphasizing that calm, natural colors will stand the test of time. Neutral shades of white look great on walls and creamy white is a practical, classic choice for trim. Quality paint is a tip I often share with those painting at home. It makes a significant difference, and the expense is worth it.
A Human Touch Beyond Design
The most rewarding moments in my business come from the excitement of clients when they see the finished projects. It’s immensely fulfilling to see them thrilled with the results. As designers, I believe it’s up to us to encourage people to step out of their comfort zone and try something they like instead of just going with what’s popular.
Beyond the projects, building relationships with clients is incredibly important to me. Over the past years, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing clients turn into friends. I approach each project not merely as a one-time job but as an opportunity to really get to know people.
