Fall—the time for sweaters and pumpkin spice is here! It is a very charming season to cozy up, slow down, and reconnect with family and friends. One of the best ways to welcome the shifting weather is through home decoration. Not only does it create a festive ambiance, it makes your home standout, too!

It’s time to reinvent your home with these trending and timeless fall house flip tips, according to designers.

Color is an essential element in fall decorations.

Jodi Golm, designer extraordinaire and owner of Manse + Moss shared with us that small shifts in color can help transform a place: “For homeowners who have modern gray interiors, the addition of pumpkin orange pillows or a chunky knit mustard throw can play well with gray tones. When it comes to color and fall, warm it up!”

Aside from using traditional autumn colors, Kathy Kuo, CEO and founder of Kathy Kuo Home says you can also experiment by adding one or two unexpected shades into your palette. Set off your yellow and orange decors by lining the dining table with a forest green runner, or layer a few pillows in a rich navy blue.

Rosy hues, terracotta, and earthy, nature-inspired tones such as green, brown, ivory and cream are favorite color trends this year that you can highlight, too. Although these are apart from the usual fall colors, they add a layer of sophistication and character to a space, especially when used in deeper shades with warm undertones.

Textures and Patterns

The beautiful thing about fall home decoration is expressing your unique style through mixing and matching textures and patterns.

“So long, linen and glass—hello sheepskin, leather, wool and wood! This time, think natural, nubby and cozy as you layer on textures to create snuggle-worthy spaces,” encourages Golm.

New York interior designer Courtney Sempliner agrees. She recommends layering “chunky knitted blankets and decorative pillows with velvets and other rich, textured fabrics” to instantly transform your space “from a light and airy summer feel to a warm and welcoming fall vibe.”

The tarnished or unfinished look is also coming back as a trend this year. Learn how to create perfectly imperfect furniture or décor, right here. Another big trend this fall is velvetperfect for a fall-ready ambience. Rattan, wicker, and cane add visual interest and work well with both neutral and bold homes. Want to offer rich and deep colors? Use materials that are brushed brass and gold.

Indoor Fall Decorations

This year, common spaces such as the dining room, living areas, and kitchen are the focus of fall decorating as many of us look forward to welcoming family back. There are many new fall home décor trends that can bring the fall feeling in your home.

For the owners of The Creamery in Roanoke, Beth Wetherill and Marta Doster, bringing nature indoors with a cutting of a fall branch styled in a vase is their favorite indoor décor touch.

Candles with earthy scents that smell like fall such as pumpkin spice, apple cinnamon, or woodsy aromas add a warm atmosphere.

Macrame is in style and hot this year! It offers a Bohemian vibe, and a classic look. Macrame decors can be used as planters, placed on walls, and other key pieces.

Succulents and houseplants are also great additions that bring the outside in!

The gallery wall trend is timeless and isn’t going anywhere! Make a mini grid with corresponding art pieces, add hanging trays and baskets or something personal such as a polaroid.

Entertainment has shifted to exterior spaces, and will be at the forefront of fall decorating. This means creating a special nook in porches and decks. “Outfit them with comfy throws, and fall pumpkins and mums. Don’t forget to get your cider and favorite cocktails, and your go-to charcuterie ready for fall fetes and football,” Golm adds.
